"Adaptations can be successful or clunkers, as many directors have found, but this one is inventive and pleasurable, showcasing Behn's sharp wit and Costello's inspired imagination."
Melinda Schupmann
Back Stage West

"While that vision isn’t exactly revolutionary—imagination is yummy!—the way Costello relates the story—through a quirky game of charades that slowly evolves into a metaphor on how imagination can (everyone clasp hands) bring people together—results in one of the cleverest and most well-intentioned plays glimpsed from this small, stinking corner of hell in some time."
Joel Beers, O.C. Weekly

"As the plot grows more complex, Costello keeps things whimsical, his actors skillfully portraying a wide variety of characters using everything at hand, from stuffed animals to Barbie and Ken dolls - then, Costello preserves the darker tone of the final act, as various characters seek to avenge romantic betrayals."
Eric Marchese, Orange County Register

"Bursting with energy and creativity, the girls stage their yarn with reckless abandon as they give in to their raw feelings."
Anne-Margret Bellavoine, Northern Lights

World Premiere Adaptation!

The Rover
by Aphra Behn
Directed and Adapted by Josh Costello

Jan. 22 - Feb. 20
Sat. 4pm; Sun. 6pm

Synopsis

Four present-day teenage girls at a slumber party play all the roles in this audacious new take on the classic story about a young girl who uses her wits and imagination to escape her fate, defeat her rivals, and win a hard-fought battle of love.
This bawdy, rowdy seventeenth-century romp by the English language's first professional woman writer is boldly remixed and reimagined in this World Premiere adaptation.

  Aphra Behn (Playwright)

Aphra Behn lived from 1640 to 1689 and became the first woman to make her living as a writer in England. She was one of the most prolific and successful writers of the Restoration. As a young woman, she may have travelled to South America and later used her experiences there as the basis for her story Oroonoko, which is among the earliest English novels. Behn served England as a spy in Antwerp, incurring debts that the government never repaid and that may have led to her seeking an unconventional career as a writer. Presumably a widow and certainly living independently, she carried on affairs with various fashionable and rakish members of the London theatre scene. Her works were popular during her lifetime; after her death, a more conservative England marginalized Aphra Behn as an example of the licentiousness of women. Her writings were returned to their rightful place in the Western canon with the rise of feminism in the twentieth century.
